Another thing (parasite) which has been going round. This time people who volunteer in the comments will explain seven of their interests which I will choose. And now, my time has come round. Right now I am feeling slightly dead and never have I been good at this sort of thing but an attempt has been promised and so an attempt shall be made.
2. Clothes: I do like clothes which look good, haha, but the truth is I know nearly nothing about them. Possibly I am not actually as interested in clothes as I thought I would or else I would know more about them by now but, actually, right now I have a lot of self esteem issues and dread regarding clothing. Ask me again in two years or one year ago.
7. Sewing: True story. I added this to my interests to get around the lack of search function for non-paying journalers and help my sister find some information. When we were done I left it there hoping something interesting may come of it someday and now my plotting has borne fruit. I would like to learn to sew but that does not differentiate it from any other craft or skill.
4. Mythology: Trying not to fall into the trap of saying "this is what it is and I am interested in it". I am very interested in the stories people tell and why they tell them. Not only in why people tell stories in general but why they tell the particular stories they tell and what that says about them and about their environment.
6. Religion: I expect most people on my Friends list will not know this but in Australia our public school system includes weekly scripture classes in Primary school. Students are divided up by denomination and given instruction in that faith. I alternated my time between non-scripture and Protestant (when I asked my mother what religion we were so I would know where to go she said "Not Catholic"). Mostly Protestant because they had fun stories whereas non-scripture mostly involved sitting quietly and drawing. As with so many school activities in which everyone else seemed to know what to do, it was quite confusing for me.
Religious stories have always been fascinating to me in the same way as other myths. The fact people still believe these ones only adds to the interest, especially since they have such immense effect on the world, even on those with no interest in them.
As an aside, I have given thought to returning to my primary school next year as a volunteer to help supervise the non-scripture children. that might not be such a good idea as I would be tempted to try to teach them things.
3. Languages: Not sure how to answer this one. I know very little about linguistics but like stories, words have always been very interesting to me. I like learning about similarities and differences between words, histories, strange relationships. I like the way it is possible to learn about a person's first language by listening for the mistakes they make in a second. There is also a long list of languages I would like to learn, starting with Mandarin. I am very interested in interactions between language and writing and what quirks my stories might acquire translated into another language, or differences and similarities between stories composed in one language versus those composed in another.
1: Astronomy: Last not quite by design. I suppose astronomy is, to me, everything. Astronomy is the story of everything from the very beginning to the very end, if there are such things. It is science unified. Chemistry, physics, planetology, biology later and what we currently call the humanities will follow*. It is exploration of our surroundings on every scale and it is a reminder of our fragility and our strength. It is the origin which allows for every beauty and of this safe harbour from which we enjoy it.
Astronomy is the lens through which I view the world and the ultimate spark behind the stories we craft. The universe is wondrous and I love it.
*if not applied to extraterrestrial life, then ourselves and what we bring with us
