aesmael: (writing things down)
Recently I read another few months of Everything Jake, September to the end of 2001. I suppose my issues with the comic could be summed up with the main character being essentially date-raped and rather than experiencing personal distress his biggest issue stemming from this is his girlfriend being mad at him.

True, the comic is often goofy, but it is also serious enough that I tend to expect serious matters to be treated with some degree of seriousness. Also true, Jake was not actually raped but so far he does not know that - all he knows is he was drugged and there are photos of him with a woman who was made to take advantage of them.

I have not found any similarly blatant examples to illustrate the racism present, it just tends to leave me with a bad taste. I guess it is not worse than that found on mainstream television, but that does not mean it is good either.

The main reason I keep reading is hope these issues will improve, along with the overall quality. If I were not complaining about sexism and racism I would be complaining about the erratic formatting, poor spelling, pacing and unclear presentation. If all this improved the strip could be a decent to good story.

I also tried Freedoom for about a day. As it turns out, sounds and graphics and especially creatures are a large part of what makes Doom work. The replacement sounds are much softer and lack the impact of the originals. The replacement sprites are lacking character too. In part this is probably due to the sounds being relatively softened (although they seem good for the arch vile replacement) but also, I just do not find the designs interesting. Am not finding myself drawn to learn more about these creatures and that fascination is a very large part of what draws me to Doom in the first place.

Apparently keeping the same gameplay but replacing the sounds and creature designs can pretty well kill my interest in a game. I suppose I will give it a look again at some later point if I remember to. Not written off as an idea, but not personally engaged by the present execution either.

Open Source games and software tend to get better over time. I used to think that the VLC player was rubbish, but it's vastly improved over the last year.
