Reading this post and the comments expressing excitement at finally having a geeky president, especially the ones indicating Star Trek fandom, had me thinking about ages.
Specifically, I was thinking it probably was not possible previously for the United States to have a president who grew up immersed in such things. Well, by age limits it would have been possible from the early 90s, but until soon the most recent presidential birthdate has been 1946, for each of the previous two. Obama was born in 1961 (per Wikipedia); he would have been five years old when Star Trek first aired, compared to 20 for Bush or Clinton.
I think this is pretty much the first reasonable opportunity for such a development.
