I have been wondering for some time now if there is a (or more than one) proper etiquette for unfriending someone on LiveJournal.

For individual unfriending I normally just do it without mentioning it and hope they never ask, hah. If there's multiple, some people go 'flist too long blah blah hence friends cut' etc etc.

Generally it tends to be "I did a mass friend's cut no offence contact me if you actually are alive after all..."

In specific cases - probably the same but only tell them?

yeah the above. Or if you want the sneaky patheticly complex way create new lJ tell them to move there unfriend them on old one and they will be none the wiser. Actually that Ideas full of holes just try the purging f list idea.

the other one is of course create customised groups and leave them out it will make your journal seem unused to them anyway

If it's cuz the person never talks to me or something I tend to just take them off. If I'm pissed at them and dun wanna get into a fight about it I just take them off. If it's cuz they are being rude on my LJ, I apologize to them in a comment but explain that it is making me uncomfortable and I take them off :D

I think it might be simply a matter of - if there is a reason for it that you think they should know, tell them. If not, then simply unfriend them with no warning.

The way friending works here, you may want to tell them if you want it to be mutal since even if you drop them, they can keep you on their list. If you simply want to stop reading their stuff, just unfriend them.

If you feel a reason is worth giving then explain and then unfriend. If not, just unfriend without telling. Most of the time they won't notice.
