Joseph|Natural Variation - Autism Blog asks Is Homosexuality Really That Different To Autism? This post takes a quick look at the history of gay rights activism and the pathologising language used to describe it in the middle of last century and implies that the public perception of autism could similarly be changed. I don't think autism is a disease either, and public perception will change within 20-25 years I think (yes I believe GenY will change the world when we get to middle age and control the machines). But that doesn't mean it will definitely be scrapped from the DSM - the 'condition' which we both have is generally regarded as not a disease by a lot of people, yet it is still in DSM because it requires certain treatment.

An underlying condition that causes specific behaviours and altered (sensory?) perceptions but is not necessarily detrimental, merely requires social comprehension and tolerance?

I can see that.

Now I have to actually read it. Later. When I have actual time. My mother just gave me an article on NZ fishing quotas which has PRIOR CLAIM.
