aesmael: (writing things down)
Another 239 words last night. Blip or acceleration? We won't know for a week.
Last night I watched what I think was the first episode of Hyperdrive, some new BBC Sci-fi show. I will not be watching any other episodes. I also watched, tonight, 'Runaway Bride', last year's Doctor Who Christmas Special. If I ignore the fact that the plot was completely stupid, it was a whole lot of fun, although there were rather more funny noises from the Empress than I would have preferred. I also find myself agreeing with [personal profile] infiniteviking that I do not like the idea that the Doctor needs a Companion. The viewers need a Companion, not the Doctor. Of course I have only been watching a few years now and only snatches of the older series (the ABC played the whole thing in the couple of years leading up to the new episodes).
Edit: It probably made a nice complement to Hogfather too. I'm thinking of the scene where the Doctor pointed out that the formation of the Earth is beautiful only because there is someone to watch it.

The companion is definitely meant to be a liaison between the viewers and the plot... I'm just curious as to why you think he should be solo. Did a companion's ineptitude push you away from the series? Or is it just that you want to see pure interaction between the Doctor and whatever he's facing at the moment?

(Aside: this third series is amazing.)

Oh, it is not that I want to see him alone. If he did not have someone along to explain things to I imagine the show would become quite cryptic. I just mean that for him the companion is not necessary and it would probably not be the literal end of the world if he were without one for a while, even if they are maybe necessary for us as viewers in the long run. I don't have any burning desire to see him off on his own though. Although now that you mention it, competence is preferred where possible and given that the next one is apparently a Ph.D candidate (or is that MD?) from the previews I have high hopes. ^_^

Hey, but since you brought it up it does look pretty excellent. The main thing I am worried about is that I think they are in danger of overusing the daleks so hopefully they won't blow it (no spoilers though, please, if you have them). Torchwood started two weeks ago too so I am looking to see if the two stations will have the episodes lined up in a way that works.
