1. Grab the nearest book.

2. Open the book to page 23.

3. Find the fifth sentence.

4. Post the text of the next three sentences in your journal along with these instructions.

5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

6. Tag five other people to do the same.

This meme has mutated a bit since the last time it came around. I am reminded of the fire planet in The Player of Games, with the flames sweeping in an endless loop around the world. This one does not consume but it is interesting to see what changes with each pass. This is the first time, I think, that I have actually used the word 'meme'. That was deliberate. I wanted to note that as far as I understand it the word meme was originally meant to refer to a unit of transmitted information in a manner analogous to a gene in biology. Now it seems to have largely mutated itself so that now it mainly refers now to a quiz or listing game which is passed around friends to... what, exactly? I think it is mainly a bonding exercise in which people are invited to share a little of themselves with their social circle, to see the little bits others reveal and so feel closer together as a group. As a social activity performed by social creatures I think the word meme is better adapted for survival than as an academic term of limited use but it has also become opened up to more opportunities for being messed around with. And now, onto the meming (see?).

The nearest book to me happens to be one of my notebooks. Page 23, in fact, is later in Krakkaire than I have so far transcribed.

'Was that a gleam in her eyes? "He's worth quite a bit of money these days." She shifted in her seat, leaned across the table toward him.'

Plus: what are the five books nearest you at this very moment??

Counting up from the base of my to-read piles:

1. Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

2. The Etched City by K.J. Bishop

3. The Portrait of Mrs Charbuque by Jeffrey For

4. A Feast for Crows by George R. R. Martin

5. Thud! + Where's My Cow? by Terry Pratchett
