A reminder that even with the HPV Vaccine women should continue to get pap smears. The vaccine does not protect against all cervical cancers, only 70% of them (I remember reading that it does not defend against all strains of Human Papilloma Virus either, only the most dangerous ones) but whatever the case the point remains that it does not confer complete protection. Screening is still important. This was all made clear at the time the vaccine was in the news, however since the ABC is running a story about, it seems a good time to remind people.
In other, older, news, it seems progress has been made toward lower dose vaccines against bird flu. This will make it easier to defend against a pandemic, even if it is still not possible to anticipate the precise strain. Update: It seems the HPV vaccine only just became available in Australia and I don't think it is available at all in places such as the United States yet.
