aesmael: (haircut)
It has been a long while since I bought much in the way of books - mostly it has been clothes of late - but yesterday I walked past a newsagent with a discount book bin (I'm sure you are familiar, books five dollars, three for twelve kind of deal) and I couldn't resist.

Ended up walking away with a pile of nine: Dragon's Treasure by Elizabeth A. Lynn. This one was the last I picked up to make the final three (even though it would still have been cheaper not to get it at all). I only went with it at all because the author is allegedly a winner of the World Fantasy Award, so it may be quite good.

Terminator Gene by Ian Irvine. I have been eyeing his fantasy stories for a while so why not start with an ecothriller? Except it turns out this is part two of a trilogy (doesn't he ever write single books?) so now I will need to read The Last Albatross too.

Perseus Spur & Orion Arm by Julian May. Parts One and Two of a series called The Rampart Worlds. I have no idea how many there are in it, except I don't remember seeing any others. I have been vaguely curious about these for several years now and since they were cheap... well, here we are.

Idlewild & Edenborn by Nick Sagan. I know these are the first two parts of a trilogy (note to self: the last is Everfree). They have been getting a fair amount of good press lately so I wanted to give them a try. I might not have if they were more expensive. Without having read them they remind me of The Dragons of Heorot and something else.

The Portrait of Mrs Charbuque by Jeffery Ford, The Etched City by K. J. Bishop & Stories of Your Life And Others by Ted Chiang. The others I got for curiosity, these ones for quality. Especially the last. Chiang is an excellent example of quality over quantity. He has only published nine stories I know of and for those received at least five awards. I already have a copy of Hell is the Absence of God in my volume of Locus Award winners (not even mentioned on his wikipedia entry so that brings it up to six) so I don't need another, but if the rest are only half as good it will be worth it. I will still be disappointed though.

And that's all she wrote.

Update: I just discovered Dragon's Treasure is actually a sequel to Dragon's Winter. I had formed the impression it was like A Game of Thrones and only appeared to be following on from a prior story. Oh well, time to find a copy of the first one now.
