aesmael: (haircut)
Today saw the final accounting and putting into order of my writing log for 2008. The creation of a new one for 2009.

In 2008 I wrote 19523 words for seven stories, two of which I finished. That is significantly fewer than the 49251 words I wrote in 2007. I had a big collapse in the early parts of 2008, what other people characterise as a severe depression, and did little or no writing for half the year. Part of the 2007 total, too, was from copying stories from longhand and flitting between many little projects I did not get far with, where 2008 was wholly new and more focused.

Looking back now I am surprised to realise the same two projects had the most new writing for the past two years. Epic Fantasy received 23483 and 13221 while Seeing the Lights got 3059 and 4983 words... that was a big surprise, since my main memory of the project is not being able to write enough to keep it going.

This year I intend to write more, although that really depends on the size of my projects. 2007 was unfocused and erratic. 2008 was more focused but dominated by collapse and lack of productivity. 2009 I want to keep and extend that focus, use it to make progress on my projects and, if not finish them, do something I can be proud of. I am looking forward to taking some quiet space and dedicating myself to my writing... can I say 'again'? I don't think I ever have devoted energy to my writing in the way I would like to. Perhaps this year that can be changed.

Lately I have looking to find software more dedicated to writing projects than the office software I have been using, especially since reading a very enthusiastic review of Scrivener. Unfortunately I neither have nor can afford a Mac, so I have been looking for a tool available on Windows or Linux - preferably both - which can perform similar functions.

Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] chaoticset I have downloaded Celtx and a recent version of yWriter. yWriter I have actually tried before, but it was a couple of years ago on a different system and I did not get very far with it. This time I would like to give each of these a more thorough go, choose a project for each and carry it through, see how they handle it and if they work for me. Celtx might work especially for M/M since I envision it as a comic, but I am not ready to write that one yet.

If anyone knows of other programs they commend highly for writing, suggestions would be welcome. Searching tends to produce a mire I would rather not sort through, programs with such unwanted features as 'plot suggesters' and the like.

And now, it is time to get started on writing for 2009.
