Unfortunately, Chinese is quite a hard language to learn, and not many non-Chinese people know it (that is why the Chinese community - even ones overseas - are pretty delighted to know that our Prime Minister knows that language). There is no alphabet and every word is a little picture.
But it is going to be useful. Therefore, I recommend that you take it in small steps, and in a few years you will be getting somewhere.
