...about the idea sex education alone should be the province of parents to teach their children, is wondering where those parents will be getting their education on sex, and into future generations. Is the goal to develop dynastic traditions of misinformation and rumour?

Alas, I fear that it is. At least, it is for the evangelicals who are pushing for the idea.

There's also the fact that not all people are comfortable talking about sex. This seems particularly true between parents and children (possibly because we have such a strong cultural length between youth/innocence and lack of sexual knowledge).

I must admit, I got a lot more sex ed from my dad's psychology books and my mom's (parents'?) copy of Our Bodies Our Selves than I ever got in school. I wouldn't trust most parents to have psychology texts and Our Bodies Our Selves lying about for their kids to read, though. I'd rather fix the fact that school sex ed tends to be "here is a film of a woman giving birth with no pain killers," "here are pictures of all the horrible, horrible diseases you can get if you have sex," and, if you're lucky, "here, put a condom on a banana." That's not sex ed. At least not good sex ed.
