aesmael: (sudden sailor)
I finally managed to install Ubuntu on my new laptop (only took me 3.5 days...), dual-booting with Vista. Now that I know what I am doing I could probably manage it again in an hour or two (assuming broadband to download with).

Now is time for sleep. Tomorrow, getting a handle on the file tree and hopefully transfer of documents for writingness. Get the sound drivers working, configure email and so forth (stop making lists, they make things sound longer and more involved than necessary). Then I trundle on my merry writing way.

Oh, first impressions. Vista is spiffy and shiny and purdy but so far it is Ubuntu that is making me say 'Wow'. Sadly Vista is also greedy for memory. This machine (Shards to Vista, Melantha to Ubuntu) has a 100GB hard drive. I wanted to allocate 20GB to Windows and the rest to Ubuntu but the most I could make it give up was 32GB. Well! That is still quite a bit of memory so we shall see. Using Gaim for IM on both OSes, on Vista it crashes every time I try to log in to MSN but seems to be working fine on Ubuntu.

Right. Now I'm done. 'Night!
