Webcomicy things
It has been a while since I wrote anything about the comics I have been reading. Clearly I feel like doing so now, if only to get it out of my system.
Clan of the Cats
Since my folder of comics to be read is arranged partly alphabetically, the next on the list after Cheshire Crossing was, I think, Clan of the Cats. The story seems straightforward enough wiccan-themed urban fantasy (with relatively little urban), although the main character is very Chosen One and grows more so each year.
I was concerned when torture entered the story that it would not be treated seriously enough. Less concerned now. There have been a few parts I found especially interesting, such as when two characters shared one body for a time, although since it is several months after reading through other examples slip my mind. When I was originally reading through I also thought it interesting how much the representation of Dracula resembled common representations of Jesus and wondered if there were anything deliberate in that, though looking now at the page I had bookmarked I do not see it.
College Roomies from Hell
After Clan of the Cats I read College Roomies from Hell. Initially I was pleased to find it next in queue because it and Clan of the Cats had early in their history a crossover event and I looked forward to seeing it from each side while the other was still fresh in my memory.
The comic itself felt very rough, very fast for the first year or so (and roughly that long before I could tell most of the characters apart). I did not begin to think of it as a comic I would like a lot until part of the soul of a main character became stuck in a cat. Around then is when I thought the storylines started growing more interesting too. Also darker, in the sort of way that leads to nearly everyone in the comic's present hating each other even though they should probably be concentrating on thwarting Satan's plans.
Oh yes. This comic definitely gets points for making hell look actually hellish, terrifying, something no person deserves.
I also enjoy the blue mushroom storylines with their shifted yet apparently coherent perspective on what is going on in the world.
I gave up on reading Cool Cat Studio and Ctrl+Alt+Del because I was not enjoying them. Concerned was set aside because I have not yet played Half Life 2.
Darken
Darken reminded me of Berserk, if Guts had made a deal with the Godhand. They are not actually similar stories, but it did remind me. I think it was the art. And the defiance of the initial lead. And this whole chapter. Oh, and the situation as it stood when I caught up to the present (about a week or so ago). Anyway.
It is very much a Dungeons and Dragons comic, right down to drow and beholders and half-dragons and the infinite spire in the Outlands and Mephistopheles ruling the eighth layer of hell. At first I thought it was going to be the violent revenge tale of a Mary Sue but it turned out more interesting than that, with, well, some plot complications and even characters having character.
Is fun. And reminds me very much of Berserk.

Added. Closetspace is already in the list, though I stopped keeping it alphabetical a while ago - more fun that way maybe. It is a long list.
